Working Solo Naked

April 9th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Now there are lots of ways that you can work if you are working solo - in your pajamas, late a night, listening to music, or even naked if you really see the need.

And today (April 9th) is naked day at Working Solo …. now before you get all excited and start calling, I mean that it’s CSS Naked Day.

UPDATE:  Seeing that April 9th is over and done with for another year, normal levels of prettiness have been resumed.

The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. Plain and simple. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words. It’s time to show off your <body>.

As many of my clients know I’m always talking to them about the benefits of web standards, and today highlights one of the benefits of a semantically correct site. You see that even without all the pretty design the content and the layout of elements still makes sense.

At last count over 1200 websites/designers had signed on at the CSS Naked Day website.

Here are a few of my colleagues who are also going naked today (as it isn’t April 9 in other parts of the world yet I will keep adding site as they go bare).

Myles Eftos
Nathanael Boehm
Lorrelle VanFossen
Phil at Unintentionally Blank

If you haven’t gone naked yet then there is still time to reveal all. If you have a Wordpress blog then it is easy with the CSS Naked Day Plugin

Drop me a message and let me know whether you are hiding all or dropping the design away to reveal the beauty of your code.

Normal programming shall be resumed tomorrow.

    Hmmm.. ‘beautiful code’?

Leah, I think this one is definitely a geeky thing - what I see here would only be something a techno-geek (or a mother) could love.

    Sorry ;)

No need to be sorry at all Karen. Actually as a business owner with a strong web presence this can have meaning for you too.

This would be a very good way for any business owner who is currently having a site designed for them to see whether the site is well laid out even without the design prettiness. That layout without excess design and ability to understand the site will be very important as more people start to use mobile devices to access the web. After all mobile broadband is far from broadband speed and more like dial up for most - and many users are turning off things like images to speed up mobile viewing times.

I’m looking forward to your CSS coming back though - this comments box is too small!! :-)

All back to normal levels of prettiness now. If you missed it you’ll have to way until 2009.
