Announced in a Sydney Morning Herald article this morning -
Seven’s long-awaited TiVo digital television recorder will go on sale in Australia next month, priced at $700.
The TiVo digital recorder has been a HUGE hit in the USA and I expect that the same will be the case here. The difference in Australia is that the TiVo box will be sold as an outright purchase as opposed to the subscription model they have in the USA.
TiVO will you to record all the free-to-air television channels (eg. ABC, Seven, Nine, Ten, SBS and their digital add-ons) using a built-in program guide. It will also provide access about 100 free internet video channels.
It will be interesting to see Foxtel’s response ….

I think its great the Tivo is going to be a one of purchase! I think Seven, Tivo and Engin are great companies and if Tivo booms like in the US, then i think i might have to go buy some shares!

For 6 stations, one month of broadcast = 6 x 30 (days) x 24 (hours)
Given 3 hours = 1 gigabyte (best compression - worst definition)
6 stations broadcast = 6 x 10 x 24 gigabytes
= 1440 gigabytes.
Question how does all this fit on a 160 gigabyte hard drive. Who is trying to kid who.

The reason Foxtel IQ is sooooo terrible here in Australia is because it has become monopolized. They charge you for having the IQ, while the TIVO is yours. I am sick of paying for the IQ, and there is no way in hell I’ll pay thru the roof for that IQ HD ($200 upfront, plus the montly rental). There hardly any good HD chanels anyway.
