And Speaking of Space – What’s With All The Posts

keyboardq.jpgThe last post that I wrote on the space between the stuff in your business had attracted some interesting comments and has prompted several off-line discussions about why we need to fill each and every crack in the business, and our lives, with more action.

Aside – Have a look at the excellent posts recently by both Karen Wallace and Chris Owen and their take on the “doingness drug”.

There is one group of people that could definitely learn to have a little more space in their lives – over-eager, over-active bloggers.

There are several hundred feeds in my regular reading folder on Google Reader (my new reader of choice) and it is interesting to track the patterns of these blogs. Some of my favourites will post only once or twice each week with considered, thoughtful pieces. In fact at times it almost seems like they have taken the time to write just for me. I am eager to read them and rarely just skip on by (I love that Google Reader ‘J’ shortcut key).

On the other hand there are those blogs that seem to be a never ending stream of stuff. Sometimes good stuff but often it is just detritus. It strikes me that they are more interesting in posting for the sake of it, or in chasing some semi-relevant post/link/??? target, than they are in whether it is relevant to the reader.

When I am talking to a prospective blogger one of the most common statements that comes up is “I don’t know if I’ll be able to blog all the time”. In comparing themselves to the prolific blog machines (even before they have started) they feel inadequate at providing one considered article each week. Nonsense I say!

I have a challenge to all bloggers, me included. Next time to set yourself the task of bashing out a blog post each and every day, stop and think about your readers. Even if you have the space to be posting at a hectic pace, your readers may not be able to keep up with you. In your search for more readers and higher ranking you may just be loosing the people you most want to keep, long time, regular readers.

    Thanks for the link, Leah.

I had never actually thought about blogging in this context – thanks for pointing the way for us to be authentic and real rather than prolific… or whatever it is we think we ought to be as bloggers.

Authentic …. now I suppose that some of the more prolific bloggers could be multi-posting each day and still be authentic. But it must be tiring to be THAT authentic :-)

Got something to say?
