Have you checked your Spam Box lately

October 26, 2007→ 1 Comment

What better thing to be doing on a Friday afternoon than doing housework on the email system ;-)

Actually is seems that it is needs at the moment.  Whereas in the past the spam filter provided as part of my email hosting server and the spam filters on the internet security suite that I use  on the computer seemed reasonably good at letting real emails through (but still letting some of those offers to enhance some part of the anatomy).   This week though things have noticably changed.

Emails from clients that I had previously whitelisted are getting trapped, along with emails from services that  had always made it into my inbox in the past (although there are also less people offering to medicate me as well).

This means that I have had to be more vigilant in checking the spam boxes (not good to miss that client email giving you the go ahead is it).

I suggest that you also include this as part of your daily housekeeping duties.  If you don’t know how to get into your spam boxes then check with your service provider.  And if I’m your service provider and you don’t know, then definitely give me a call (the email might just get caught in the spam trap).

We Can All Use a Calm Space Occassionally

October 5, 2007→ 4 Comments

It’s been a very long day here …. it’s 9.30pm and after dinner with the family and a few quick finishing touches to today’s project I’m calling it a night.  You see I’ve been at the computer since 4.30am (not the whole time but a real good chunk of it).

But I am very pleased with today’s effort – with some focused effort by Káren Wallace, a wonderful client, and yours truly we managed to complete a project that Káren has been working on for a number of months.  Along with some wonderfully wise and inspiring contributors (including Chris Owen, Angela Esnouf, Marjorie Lim, and Annie Hutton) Káren has launched a new online magazine called The Calm Space.

Here is a quick glimpse of what’s in store -

The Calm Space

Why not drop over there now and have a look.  I’m sure Káren  would love you to say hi while you are there.

Walk to Work Day tomorrow

October 4, 2007→ 4 Comments

Walk to Work DayFor those of us who are self-employed and work from a home based office the concept of a walk to work day couldn’t be easier – how hard can it be to walk from your kitchen to whichever room your desk is in (or even to the garage).

So tomorrow’s National Walk to Work Day (here in Australia) should have the support of every home-based business owner.

But I want to extend the challenge to you, my home-based colleagues, just that little bit more …. instead of staying within the confines of your house I want you to get out the front door and walk a little further.  Whether it is around the block, across the suburb or even a few kms more the choice is yours.

In my experience, walking before you sit yourself down in front of that computer can be a great way to clear the mind and get some oxygen in the system before the day gets out of hand.  Now I must admit that over the past couple of weeks I haven’t been doing this but that is about to change.  In fact I’m going to make October Walk to Work month.

What are you going to do?

Did Alister Cameron see your credit card details?

October 2, 2007→ 2 Comments

Online fraud is a scary thing and something that I keep top of mind when I’m interacting on the web.  I make sure that I change passwords regularly, I have a couple of different user names, and I am conscious of who I share my details with.

And the reason why I do this was reinforce by a post by Alister Cameron last Saturday called “Did I uncover your credit card details on the web today!?” (now there’s a title to get anyone’s attention).

Today I accidentally uncovered a huge list of people’s names, addresses and credit card details online. No kidding.

I found more than that: login details to people’s web hosting accounts and e-commerce site memberships as well. It was really freaky to think it was all just staring at me, thanks to a flukey Google search. Nothing more complicated than that. (And no, don’t email me for the search details!)

Go and read the post NOW and take any action you need to make sure you, your identity and your financials are safe online.

And if you sell over the internet, then you have even more work to do to ensure that your clients have a safe buying experience with you.
