Where’s the space in your business?

As a small business owner we often try to squeeze as much into the day as we can. We want to feel, and be, productive. We focus on what we need to do.

But lately I have been focusing on equally on what I DO as well as what I DON’T do. The stuff I include as well as the stuff I leave out. Not just the time I spend with clients and on the business but also the spaces in between.

As an aside …. I am sooo excited about the rain we are getting here today. When there are level 3 water restrictions due to an exception drought then small things like rain can make me happy. Big things can be nice but I am grateful for small mercies.

Friday Tool Tip – Colour Me In

January 20, 2007→ 4 Comments

kuler.gif

When you were 3 it didn’t really matter what colours you used to express yourself. Your parents would dutifully take your latest art work and put it on the fridge, wall or noticeboard.

Times have changed though and your clients and marketplace may not be quite as accepting of your love of mixing blue, green and purple together as your parents once were. Colour conveys so many things and for small business owners it can convey how we want our business to be taken. Whether you like it or not colour is a very personal thing and a point of judgement. So whether you feel on top of colour selection, and just need some inspiration, or if you really have no idea what goes with your corporate navy blue, then there are some outstanding colour scheme tools available online.

When writing yesterday’s post letting you know that Carnival of Entrepreneurs was being hosted by Ben Yoskovitz at StartupSpark I also notice that Ben had been playing with the “[tag]6-Word Story[/tag]” [tag]writing challenge[/tag] that had been set by [tag]Robert Hruzek[/tag].

Carnival of Entrepreneurs – This Week’s Edition

January 18, 2007→ Add Comments

The entrepreneur’s blog carnival hits the stage again this week with an interesting array of posts.  In the words of the carnival host Ben Yoskovitz :

We’ve got a huge list of content to go through, with some great posts on topics ranging from motivation, inspiration, learning, making money online and failure. There’s a few themes running through the posts, which I find particularly interesting. It shows that people are thinking along the same lines at the beginning of 2007.

The carnival will be taking on a “roving status” as of February with Ben looking for bloggers that are interested in playing host for a week.  I will definitely be throwing my hat in that ring.  If you have some time why not give it a try.

New Year Productivity Tips #1

January 17, 2007→ 1 Comment

It doesn’t matter whether you have been back from the holidays for a couple of weeks, are still on holidays or didn’t have any holidays at all (you poor bugger) there are to-do’s that always work better if you set them as a habit at the beginning of the year.

Backing up your data is one of those habits!

“That old chestnut you might ask?” Yep that one again.

I’m not going to go into the regular stuff about your files, email etc, what I will point you towards are [tag]backup[/tag] tips for a couple of commonly used applications – AWeber, Wordpress and TypePad.

2007 The Plan

January 8, 2007→ 5 Comments

2007.gif

2.5 weeks the break was. Just 17 days. But so many things are different now that it’s 2007. I was busting to get back into the office as there were so many thoughts and ideas running through the head that I was eagerly awaiting getting back into the office. I am pumped (and not just because the Australian Cricket side won back the Ashes in a 5-0 whitewash). This is real energy. This energy is different the to start of year “wishes and dreams” stuff, where resolutions are the order of the day. This is real! This is energy that calls for plans and actions, not just the resolve to do things differently. This is core!

At this time of year your don’t have to browse very far in either traditional or new media before you bump into someone who wants to share “expert ways to keep your New Year resolutions in love and work” (a real headline from a local paper’s Sunday magazine – yuk!). As a small business owner I realised sometime ago that resolutions are pipe dreams that don’t get your business far.

If you are interested in knowing my plans for 2007 then you can keep reading. If not then I understand (very busy here too) and I will look forward to catching you when blogging here regains a more normal routine next week.
