Friday Fun – Top Entrepreneurial Songs

October 27, 2006→ 2 Comments

There are many inspirations that move a songwriter – love, hate, jealousy, entrepreneurship ????? Maybe not!

But even if we entrepreneurs don’t do it for songwriters sometimes that do it for us. Ever been inspired by a song? Ever turned to singing at the top of your lungs some lyrics that reinforce your feeling to “go it alone”? (especially when things aren’t at their best?)

Pam Slim at Escape From Cubicle Nation this week challenged her readers to add to her Top 10 Entrepreneurial Songs list. There were some interesting additions but I thought that it was time to add an antipodean twist to it and name the Top 10 Australian and New Zealand songs that could make it into the entrepreneur’s song book.

  1. Best Years of Our Lives – Richard Clapton
  2. Take the Weather With You – Crowded House
  3. Pleasure and Pain – The Divinyls
  4. Noboy Takes Me Seriously - Split Enz
  5. Dreams of Ordinary Men – Dragon
  6. It’s a Long Way to The Top – AC/DC
  7. Panic Room – Paul Mac
  8. Love vs Money – Noiseworks
  9. State of Independence - Kate Ceberano
  10. From Little Things Big Things Grow – Paul Kelly

So what would your entrepreneurial song book cotain?

How to Make the Move from TypePad to Wordpress – Part 2 – Home Sweet Home

October 27, 2006→ 1 Comment

Well here we are at the new Working Solo online home. Nice new framework (using Wordpress), nice new layout and decoration (based on some great coding by the guys at Glued Ideas) and some time speand tweaking, playing and making it feel like home.

(For those of you that might be viewing this view your RSS feed reader here is a small page grab that might tempt you over to visit the site in your browser).

Most things went to plan. What took me by surprise was :

  • The time spent playing around the layouts, themes etc (A girl could get lost in that world very easily)
  • Removing the domain mapping and pointing my domain back at the server where this is all being hosted (workingsolo.com.au works but add that little www in front an the site doesn’t exist any more).
  • The ease and benefit of using Sidebar Modules (I wish more Wordpress templates where enabled for SBM).

So now it is back to work on client projects (which has been keeping me busy over the past few months). Here’s a little bit of shameless self-promotion and promotion of my clients. If this sort of thing make you turn-up your nose then just look away for a moment. If you like that sort of thing then vist the Projects Page.

Firefox 2.0 Officially Released

It must be the week for the official launch of the latest version of browsers – yesterday was Firefox’s turn.

There are many things to love about the new Firefox (I have been using the beta from some months now).

  • the fact there is an inbuilt session manager that will restore Firefox to where you were before the window closed/crashed
  • you can also recover a closed tab (ever closed a tab when you really wanted to close the one next to it?) Ctrl-Shift-T (Windows) or Cmd-Shift-T (Mac)

The makers of Firefox extensions are working to update their applications to work with 2.0 (so you might find some of your favourite added extras might be out of action for a little while) but all in all this is a definite must get – especially for those of you who are already Firefox fanatics.

How to Make the Move from TypePad to Wordpress – Part 1

“The art of progress is to preserve order amid change, and to preserve change amid order.” – Alfred North Whitehead

I have played in TypePad’s advanced templates, doing special coding of html in order to tweak the look and feel of some sites. It will remain a great platform for many people who aren’t really tweakers. But I am – so it is time to do some more tweaking.

Wordpress (hosted on my domain) will provide me with some more time to play with the extra level of detail that Wordpress can provide. My mission is to grow the Working Solo site to a place where it is a real resource centre for small business owners (women in particular) who want to have some of the tech-side of business demystifed.

So please excuse the mess around here while I make the move from TypePad to Wordpress. (If you read this in your RSS feed reader you probably won’t notice much difference).

I will keep some notes over the next few days and post about any lessons learnt in the process. Stay tuned.

Internet Explorer 7 has been Released

Ie7
If you are one of the majority of people that use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for your browser then you might be interested in downloading the latest release IE7.

This application has been in beta testing phase for some time now with millions of users (me included) and in the last 24 hours has been taken off the testing list and put into full release.

Some of the features bring it into line with other browsers (suc as my personal favourite Firefox) such as tabbed browsing, support for RSS feeds, customisation of your search via your favourite seach engine, and, they claim, improved security.

If you are a lover of all things Internet Explorer then you will enjoy the new experience.
