The Blog – Your Job is to Create Content

Many of my friends, colleagues and clients know of my love for technology and especially for technology that helps people communicate (no wonder I was in telecommunications for 14 years). This, combined with my love of the written word, explains my passion for blogs.

One of the distracting factors I am finding for most people though is the technology. Yes Blogs and RSS are very new technology and it is still considered leading edge – but way too much emphasis is put on the technology and not enough on the content.

The axiom for web sites is still valid for blogs – content is king.

In a recent blog post the eloquent Andy Wibbels captured this thought in his post “Nobody Knows What a Blog is – And Does That Really Matter”

As a professional coach with wisdom, techniques and tips to share your job is  to create engaging, interesting content – to engage with the reader, to take a coach approach to online journalling.

What wisdom are you failing to share with your target (or the general public) just because you are playing too small or worry about your lack of technical knowledge?

What is Your Parsley?

I am a unashamed fan of the blog and find it a useful way to stay in touch with the thoughts or people I like and respect. One of those is Seth Godin.

In a post from earlier today Seth posed a great question about the little things that people don’t ask for but they indeed expect (even without asking for it). It may not seem like much , it may not cost you much but people will go elsewhere to look for it.

So ….. what is your parsley?

So many solo professionals that I meet are challenged by where to find the clients. They are prepared to have a long conversation about how clients are hard to find, how they are tired of chasing the client, and each wants to know what they can do to get more clients.

It strikes me that each of these solo-pros are like the dog chasing its tail – and they think it is the only game in town.

We are all surrounded by so many people, and each of them is challenged by so many things each and every day that it strikes me that all a good solo-pro needs to do is is 3 things -

Hanging Up the Boots in a Big Way

40% of the workforce will be elligble for retirement in the next 3-5 years !! WOW!!

This doesn’t mean that they all will retire, but more than likely with boomers (and this is the age group that is being spoken of) it will be a new and different type of retirement.

Do you know what impact this will have on your industry, your clients and your business? Worth a bit of planning me thinks.

A New Beginning

Even though I have tried a number of blogging tools the decision has come to integrate it with my site. So this is a new beginning of a new blog.

My blog schedule is to post here at least 3 times each week with the purpose of sharing tools, resources and tips with the people that I have a passion for – the brave souls who have deicided to go it alone and entered the self-employed realm of the solo professional.
